Raised on a high-country sheep and beef farm in mid-Canterbury, Rebecca Hawkes is a poet and painter based in Wellington.
She holds a first-class Honours in Media Studies from Victoria University of Wellington and a Master’s in Non-Fiction Creative Writing with Distinction from the International Institute of Modern Letters.
Rebecca has a collection of poems in AUP New Poets 5, and her poems, essays and articles have been published in various New Zealand literary journals such as Landfall, Sport, Mimicry and Starling.
She was due to undertake her Fellowship in May 2020, but with the pandemic, it has been postponed. She will likely offer a public reading and a writing workshop, and will work on her debut collection.
Rebecca writes, "I want to reconnect with my rural roots to rediscover some of the specific textures of my upbringing. For this reason, I believe the Ema Saiko Fellowship would be invaluable to my work, locating me back in a heartland community out of the city."
